Some activists are eager to lead and be the face of a movement. Others prefer to stay in the background - quietly organizing, being an advocate and encouraging others to get involved. Charlie Thomas is the second kind.
Charlie was drawn to the anti-war, anti-racist movements of the 60s and 70s, dedicating his life to social and economic justice and leading to his involvement in union movements and developer protests of the early 2000's in Asheville, NC.
Our guest is investigative journalist, former editor and city councilor Cecil Bothwell, to talk about his new book, Regarding Charlie: The True Story of a Quiet Force That Reshaped Asheville in the 21st Century, Charlie's activism, the relationship between city government and commercial interests, how much of local law comes down to interpretation, and why he thinks the most useful thing Regarding Charlie can do is convince readers they don't need a title to make change.
